What type of material would one normally find in a social study class?
My son is definitely a STEM guy, and we're trying to reduce time spent on non-stem classes.
I'm a bit worried that, by cutting back on history, and literature, and languages, he might be missing some important notions. We're cutting back, but not eliminating. He will not be exposed to any economics, social studies of any type.. Anyway, I'm seeing holes in his education, and I'm not sure how to fill them. I know it's not something Kolbe offers, and that's all right. I just don't know where to look.

I've investigated lots of things today, and found something that I really like.
Connect the Thoughts: Current Events
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php
Would these booklets (a certain number of them) be good enough to create a one-year World History class ? (my son is doing the Magna diploma)
I'm thinking mainly (but not exclusively)
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php?course=28543 : World Problems: Current Wars (25 to 40 hours)
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php?course=28570 : World Problems: Emerging Third World Countries (15 to 30 hours)
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php?course=21678 : World Problems: Global Poverty and Hunger (20 to 30 hours)
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php?course=23251 : World Problems: Human Rights Abuses (15 to 30 hours)
http://www.connectthethoughts.net/upper--current-events.php?course=22182 : World Problems: Terrorism (15 to 20 hours)

The whole course would be between 90 and 150 hours.

Hey-
I've pinged Marita and Everett on this questions. Seems the stomach bug is working its way through the office (glad I work remotely ha ha!) They will have some ideas and thoughts for you...

Thanks! Megan

Oh no!
Not a stomach bug!

It seems each time I am in need of an answer from Kolbe, they get health issues. I must be carrying a really nasty disease..

Get well, y'all!

The general rule of thumb is that a full academic credit (10 credits in our system) is roughly 4 hours per week, 8-9 weeks per quarter, 4 quarters per year. This would put it in the 120-140 hour range. Based on that, it looks like this might be do-able social studies elective.

Yep. Social Studies and History are generally interchangeable terms when used at Kolbe, while the "World" specifies what type of History it is. I was just repeating the term you'd initially used in your question.

Thanks. My thought process has changed from my first post to my last. I did go from Social Studies to possible History class in the meantime... Sorry about that.
